I am....
white (privilege)
female (oppression)
middle class (privilege)
heterosexual (privilege)
cisgender (privilege)
educated (privileged)
All these parts or threads make up who I am, to say I am treated a specific way because of one aspect is not exactly true as much as people think. That's where this idea of intersectionality comes into play. Intersectionality is a theory stating that oppressive identities are all interconnected and cannot be examined separately from one another.
When I was doing my flashcard for homework I was easily able to put the parts to my identity into its respective location (either oppressive or privilege). One example is that easily knew to put being female as my most oppressive thread. It has always been clear to me that women are consider less than men. Men are thought as smarter, better leaders, stronger and everything that women were not. As a women I feel
1.) less safe walking on the street alone at night
2.) Am most likely paid less than male coworkers.
3.) If I’m careless with my driving its attributed to my sex.
That's just a few ways I feel my sex is oppressive. That being said I tried to come up with examples where I am privileged to be a women, since it is not talked about much. Some examples that I came up with are:
1.) From an early age the males will be instructed never to hit me, but I will not have gotten the same instructions.
2.)When I’m on a date things will be paid for me.
3.)If I go to a bar I can expect that members of the opposite sex will purchase drinks for me.
4.)If I was to get a divorce I will be guaranteed custody of my children unless I am deemed to be unfit.
