My boyfriend and I went to Lilydale this Saturday, and while we were sitting on the beach, I wanted a picture of everything. I took a lot of pictures alongside this one; many of which were of me, my boyfriend, and the beautiful landscape. I chose this picture because I didn't stage the photo to be perfect. Or windfree. I wasn't even wearing make-up (#nofilter) and I'm not skinny. I'm also queer, so the diversity in this photo is definitely more than it would have been in the past. Essentially, this feminist selfie captures me having fun regardless of how I look. This photo is a feminist selfie to me because I took the picture and I took it for me. It represents the fun I'm having, taking photos for my own sake, my true acceptance of my body regardless of imperfections, and reclaiming my image as not an object, but part of me.
(Bonus feminist selfie)
This is one of the other pictures I took of me and my boyfriend while at Lilydale; this photo also counts as a feminist selfie because in years past, a man is in charge of taking the photo of a woman, thus enforcing the "male gaze" of photographing women. Because I took the photo instead, I'm reclaiming my body from this male gaze. I'm standing in front as I'm controlling the camera, so now I control the positioning of both our bodies, even the male body, for a camera! #seizethegaze
