Elliot Devine's Book " I know Exactly How I Got My Name" was a great book. I sat down to read it one night and read the whole thing in one sitting. It's short but gives you a large amount of insight, something I was necessarily expecting.I was very interested in the narrators story and how they made their journey. I felt as though the book was structured to put you in the narrators shoes. It really made me see what it would be like to be trans, an identity in which I am not all that familiar with.
A large part of the book was about how the narrator was bullied and teased in school, it made me sad and extremely mad. While reading, I was appalled that people would say such things to one another. Things such as "I'll put a bag over your head and fuck you too. Even if you have a pussy" or "fuck you dyke." I could imagine being talked to like that by my peers, it give me such an understanding of what others in the LBGT community go through on a daily basis. I think schools need to be more proactive about these kinds of issues. More stress should be put on being accepting of your peers, as well as how gender isn't concrete. We should being showing kids at the school level the gender bread man and have them read Killerman's book. This shouldn't be a topic that only gets discussed at the college level.
