I thoroughly enjoyed watching the film Tough Guise 2. In fact, I texted my aunt halfway through watching the documentary in class telling her to watch it as well. My aunt is a strong feminist who I have always looked up to and she had two teenage boys.
Although she believes in women's rights, there are great points specifically to be made about how young boys are raised. On one hand, she is great because she encourages positive dialogue about sex, consent, and respecting women. On the other hand, her boys grew up heavily obsessed with sports, video games, guns, etc. that encourage violence in men.
Personally, I was very surprised by many of the statistics in this documentary. The one that stood out to me the most is something like 99 percent of school shooters are white men. I thought a great point was made: that when white men commit these crimes, it is blamed on mental health, but when a black man or any women commits these types of crimes, it becomes a discussion about race or gender. To support this idea, many people in our culture support the phrase: let boys be boys, This suggests that men are supposed to be violent, and that we as a world are okay with that.
Overall, I think that this is a great documentary that should be shown not only in the academic world, but to parents and teachers. By sharing this information and opening up a positive conversation, we as a society can work towards positive change.
