Bridget Doyle Introduction

Hello! My name is Bridget Doyle, I'm a sophomore history major from Rochester, NY. I'm most likely going to add a minor in Women's and Gender studies this semester. I'm also involved in the Fredonia Chamber Choir, and I recently signed up to join the Women's Student Union! I'm not totally sure what I want to do with any of this when I graduate, I keep going between wanting to teach and wanting to get involved with law and politics. I identify strongly as a (bad!) feminist. Over the past year and a half I've been increasingly interested in feminism, and I've been doing a ton of research on the topic in hopes of understanding it better. I'm taking this class to help me with that initiative!

My sign says "I need feminism because RAPE is still a justifiable act in today's society." One thing I am incredibly passionate about is helping people who are victims of sexual and domestic violence. I believe that the feminism movement can really help people who have gone through these terrible situations find their footing again and become ten times stronger than before. I've encountered tons of people who have tried to justify the act of rape to me with reasons ranging from the "short skirt" theory to the possibly the most terrifying, "she/he has to give it to me, I'm entitled to it." As much as these so called "justifications," make me sick to my stomach, it just proves to me that we all need to work together to educate people on consent and basic human rights.
