My name is Heather Cooper and I am from Syracuse. I am a senior here at Fredonia majoring in English with a minor in political science. After Fredonia, I plan to attend law school with the hopes to pursue a career in sports and entertainment law. Although I do not currently identify as a feminist, because I don't know enough about feminism to identify, I am hoping that this class will help me better understand feminism.
My sign reads "I need feminism because neither the mirror nor the scale define my beauty" this is something that I strongly believe in. I was the girl in middle school and high school who was told that the number on the scale was not okay. The image in the mirror was far from beautiful. In order to "fix" my flaws I need to change my body image so that it was similar to everyone else. That would make me beautiful. I struggled for a long time with body image and took a path that was far not healthy. Eventually though I learned that I am beautiful exactly the way that I am. Every person regardless of what the mirror or the scale says is beautiful in their own way. A number or a reflection does not hold the power to define what beauty is, we define our own beauty.
