Feminist Selfie + Introduction

Hello everyone! My name is Deanna Buley, I am a 19 year old in my junior year here at Fredonia. I'm majoring in both Music Business with a concentration in vocal jazz and Women and Gender Studies. I'm currently the treasurer for the Pride Alliance on campus and I work at Tim Hortons. I take a lot of pride in my different identities that I am composed of because it took me a long time to feel comfortable and worthy in my own skin. I am a queer, feminist, cisgender woman. I like to spend time learning new things and meeting new people, reading a good book, and spending too much money online shopping. I love to talk, however I'm finding myself loving to listen to other peoples perspectives and stories even more as of recently.

"I need feminism because catcalling me is not a compliment, it's harassment."
There are many reasons I need feminism. However, since coming to college two years ago, and being out and about more with my friends, I've experienced more catcalling, particularly at night, at times I'm alone, or any other time I'm in a situation that I can easily be made to feel vulnerable. When I ignore the comments shouted across the street, from a car, in a bar or club, I'm asked why I'm so rude, so bitchy, how dare I ignore their unwanted comments? However, many people still see catcalling as this harmless flirting, a game, instead of being seen for what it really is: harassment. A way to make a person feel uncomfortable, unsafe, panicky.
