Social Constructs of Disability at Fredonia

I must admit that before taking this class and researching Fredonia's policies regarding students with disabilities, I was unaware of the circumstances. Sure, I have seen the handicap accessible door buttons as I have walked past them, but that is it.

There are a variety of services available for students with a variety of disabilities at Fredonia. For example, students registered with the DSS office have accessibility to special exam accommodations, notetaking help, alternative textbook options (Braille, Digital Talking Books --Learning Ally--Electronic Text, MP3, etc.), and housing accommodations.

Students who also feel they have not been fairly treated, by law, have the right to file grievance.

Fredonia has policies in place to help those with disabilities, but they definitely make you jump through a lot of hoops to get what you need. It is clearly labeled in multiple places on the website that it is the student's responsibility to make sure that they handle the proper paperwork (which includes a lot of private information), meet certain requirements, check in with the office regularly, etc. Life as a college student can be hectic enough as it is, without having not only a disability -- but have to worry about following extremely specific protocols to obtain basic needs.
