And My New Identity Is..

I remember when we made the two sided cards earlier in the semester, which represented privilege on one side and oppression on the other. "Disabled" was my privilege and "Gay Male" was my oppression. However, when asked to create a new identity for myself, I didn't want either of those things to define me. I say this because I saw an opportunity to identify as I choose with this exercise, rather than conform to societal definition and/or categorization. The identity I came up with is Altruistic. I remember the first time I ever heard the word. It was my senior year of high school and my Health teacher, Mr. Block  the word and what it meant - from the on, it stuck with me. An Altruistic person is someone who is unselfish and always thinks of others, so this word typifies my nature ad my being. The best part is I don't have to use the culturally created, conventional markers, which are laden with sameness and stereotypes - I am altruistic.

NOTE: The only thing that has been photoshopped in this picture is the color :)
