I Know Very Well How I Got My Name
Reading this book was very interesting to me, because I grew up cis and straight, and never faced serious bullying or the feeling that I didn't belong. There was one unpleasant year in catholic school, but I had friends and was very comfortable through most of my development. I have always enjoyed hearing the stories of others, and learning about the struggles that others have faced.
One of the things that I found the most interesting while reading this book came from my perspective as a future educator. In most of the early chapters of the book, the narrator details a situation that happened at school, between himself and other students, or the teacher themselves. Through all of these stories, I was amazed at the inaction of the teacher. I feel that it is the responsibility of the teacher to make sure all students feel like they belong, and not that the other students hate them. For example, when the narrator describes the symbols that other students used to mean that they hate the narrator. If this symbol is known within the class to mean that, I am amazed that the teacher would have been oblivious to this, or that they would have done nothing to stop it. I am aware that teachers can't see everything that happens, but there were way too many instances of bullying in the classroom for all of the teachers to be oblivious.
