I Know Very Well How I Got My Name
I really enjoyed reading this book that I finished it in one sitting. I thought Elliot did a fantastic job writing this book, and his writing gave perfect visuals. I could imagine a group of children running around, and then picturing a young Elliot crying for not fitting in. Karen really annoyed me throughout the book, but I think that she was an important piece for Elliot. Sometimes we have certain people in our lives that we learn from, and I think Karen in a way helped Elliot. I thought Elliot's writing had a flow that kept my attention to find out the journey. One theme that really stuck with me throughout this book was having to label yourself. This is something we went over in class a few time, and I'm still not sure how I feel about them. A part of me thinks they help in the identity process, but sometimes they take hold of who we are. So someone will only think of you as that label, and not the rest of your character. Elliot seemed to have a lot of moments throughout the book that the desire for a label would've helped his journey in understanding himself. I appreciate this book for the insight it provided, and hope to see more books that tell of other trans stories.
