Lessons learned from Pascoe's book

As an anthropology minor, I appreciated Pascoe's unorthodox way of fieldwork analyzing masculinity. Pascoe interviewed the students and gained an insight in the various ways of displaying masculinity.  Some of the responses the students gave made me cringe, because I could hear some kids from my high school saying the same thing. One does not want the title of "fag" because it is viewed as being more feminine. Many of the students said that they would not sure the word to someone that identifies as gay. This book reminded me of my high school. The guys in the school would throw around that word as if it had no baggage to it. They would use it as an insult of the lack of display of masculinity toward each other. I would say one difference from my school and the one analyzed in the book would be the administration. The teachers and staff would step in, but it would still happen from time to time. I really enjoyed reading about the basketball girls that would also display masculinity qualities. That section showed how anyone can possess feminine or masculine qualities. I look forward to reading the rest of the book.
