Masculinity and Sexuality in High School

     C.J. Pascoe's book Dude You're a Fag breaks down the institutional structures that reproduce the binary in high schools, which results in an environment that fosters bullying based upon (real or perceieved) gender identity and sexuality. Although it is disheartening to know that this form of bullying is rampant in almost all schools due to the institutional structures which encourage adherence to the binary, there are ways in which to discourage bullying through teaching diversity and through making systematic changes to the institutional school structures. GSA's should be a recognized club in every school, headed by supportive teachers and faculty. It should be mandatory for ALL school employees (even those such as maintenance workers and lunch servers) to take bullying prevention training, and mandatory school assemblies should be held, in conjunction with the GSA, to promote and teach diversity acceptance among the staff and the students. As for the institutional school structures that foster bullying, administration and staff should all be aware and up to date with anti-bullying laws and enact them through enforced school policies. There should be a Title IX officer placed in every school, and actions should be taken so that everyone, including parents, are aware of who this individual is, so that any bullying issues that do occur can be addressed properly and immediately.
