Introduction: Feminist Selfie

Hello! My name is Maegan and I am a senior Visual Arts and New Media major with a Women and Gender Studies minor. I'm from the tiny town of Canisteo, NY - home of the famous living sign which no one has heard of (but if you Google it, it's pretty nifty). I'm on the Executive Board for the Pride Alliance at Fredonia, this is currently my second year on it. It is really satisfying helping anyone in the queer community with any problems they may have and just educating anyone in general on the subject. I would love to continue educating and helping others, possibly while using different art forms.

My sign says "I need feminism because my leg hair should not be deemed "gross" just because I'm female. My body = My choices" I decided to talk about this with my feminist selfie because I stopped shaving during "No Shave November" of 2013 and when my sister sees my legs, she tells me they are gross. Women often get held to specific beauty standards, including having to shave their legs, armpits, and even pubic hair. If women don't, they often get called 'dirty' or 'gross' even though hair is natural (and in some instances, safer for them to have). When "No Shave November" comes around, many men will stop shaving their beards just for the heck of it, yet when women say they are going to do "No Shave November" with their leg hair, armpits, or anything else, they often get backlash. One particular thing I see men saying to women is "If you do No Shave November, then expect No D Til December" or something along those lines. The latter line of my sign sums up my feelings about all of this and also the many other problems that our society throws onto women about their bodies.
