Feminist Photoshop

I think the idea of 'feminist photoshopping' is very intriguing. When Tina Fey describes it in the Bossypants chapter we read, I agreed with what she was saying about the subject. To me, it felt like she was saying that yes, it is ridiculous how much photoshopping appears in magazines to the point where it completely alters the model - but with 'feminist photoshopping' they just do small things because they understand that the model is not perfect, but they are not changing the weight of the model or anything like that. To me, Tina Fey just seemed to be saying that the feminist photoshoppers understand that models have their days where they might have more acne than other days or the model forgot to shave in their busy day - so they just smooth over those places. With 'normal' photoshoppers, they would make the model look skinnier, bigger breasted, more toned, more muscular, whatever the case may be. That is changing the model to the point where it is not even the model's true self anymore. Feminist photoshopping might just take away that annoying pimple that seems to be taking over your face. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to take away that pimple or armpit hair.

I think what Tina Fey was trying to emphasize was that they were taking away the armpit hair because they understand Tina might not have had a chance to shave and feels uncomfortable putting that in a magazine, they are not taking the armpit hair away because they think it is ugly and society should not have to see that. Not wanting that nasty pimple and taking it away is different than society telling you that you need to take it away to be pretty or perfect. Not wanting the pimple there might be rooted in society telling us that pimples are gross, but taking it away for your own feelings is better than taking it away to make someone else feel better. So that is why I feel that I agree with feminist photoshopping - because it is not saying that we should photoshop our bodies, but saying that we can reclaim photoshop to use it for what we want.
